Then start developer mode and choose a Gear VR app to run. With your controller just click on home button couple of times until it is activated in screen. Now put Samsung phone device into your Gear VR. Hit home button to get option to quit app. Now you are in Oculus Home.
Just a question: why not just replace the device with S9, S9+, or Note 9? Or try out Google's VR?
For you wireless charging comes in handy.

Id rather prefer my a8 because its like the best size and weight for me, s9 is too light and i drop it more than a8, ik its wierd, also idc about the specs as long as it has enough to play a low end gameFollow the link below to setup developer mode and how to use developer modehttps://docs.unrealengine.com/en-us/Platforms/GearVR/Debugging

Next, tap on Storage then tap on Manage Storage.
Then, tap on the VR Service Version 6 times.
You should now see a scan process happen and when completed you should see the Developer Mode toggle on the screen. This doogle should turn on at off Developer Mode. I Developer mode your screen should have a little flicker. That is normal and won't notice while you have the Gear VR headset on.
Now, you should be able to launch your Gear VR Project and have it display without having to use the Gear VR Headset.
I only tested this in Samsung Galaxy Note 8. Which I have. Latest test w/o and w/ headset today.
Test without headset first. Then it works then test with headset.
The down side of Developers mode is that it drains your battery.
The downside of your port problem - You can't use the controller on the headset itself. You can only use the remote controller. Due to the fact that your device can't connect to the Gear VR through its Micro USB port.
Sometimes resetting can help. Uninstall the VR apps first if you can. So there is no VR apps left behind like in Micro SD card.
If I were you I would get very tired of losing battery power so quickly while using Gear VR in Developer mode without being able to AC power the device while in VR headset. Personally I would just replace the device for better experience overall. Wireless charging not solution, because you can't wireless charge the device while in VR headset.
Note - I move some of the VR apps in my Micro SD card. Don't move any Samsung or Oculus apps to your Micro SD card. This will cause problems. most other VR apps can be moved. ---------- Post added at 03:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:48 PM ----------

Nope, charging port broken partly, it worked before it brokeSamsung A8 has support issues with some stuff in Gear VR (Oculus). This maybe what is going on.
(How it broke was i almost fried my charging port when i heard a sizzle, right when i heard the sizzle, i removed the cord immediately to avoid any more damage making my phone unchargeable)

Just out of curiosity. Was the cable and charger Samsung orginal (not something from Amazon with Samsung name on it or another brand name)? Was the cable showing wear? Did you have to move the cable around to get the A8 charging?

Nope, it actually does support it, its just that i just forgot to set it upTalking about Gear VR stuff. Like Samsung PhoneCast is not supported (issues) on A8. Maybe A8 has issues with Developer mode as well.

You need to go back and turn on Dev mode. Dev mode is off by default due to the flickering. Once you are done, just turn off dev mode again to stop the flickering.
"To enable and disable VR Developer mode, slide the Developer Mode slider from On to Off and VR Developer mode will be enabled or disabled."
