War Memorial Wall Defaced With 'The Real Heroes Are the Vaccinated' Graffiti
A war memorial in Canada was vandalized on November 11 ahead of a celebration for Remembrance Day, a holiday to commemorate veterans. The graffiti on the memorial wall, located in Cranbrook, British Columbia, written in green paint, read: "The real heroes are the vaccinated!"
According to the Canadian Global News, local authorities were made aware of the graffiti around 7 a.m. on Thursday.
"As a community, we are beyond disappointed by the disrespectful actions of those responsible for defacing such an important monument on such an important day for all Canadians," the city of Cranbrook wrote on Facebook on Thursday.
"This act does not speak to the character and values of our citizens and our community," the city added.
City officials were able to remove the graffiti ahead of Remembrance Day celebrations and parade that had been planned for Thursday, according to Global News.
"We are grateful to the member of the community that alerted us of the vandalism early this morning. We are extremely proud of our staff, RCMP and Fire Services members who were able to quickly remove the graffiti and allow for the Remembrance Day ceremonies to go on, and remain focused on honouring all our veterans, past and present for their selfless sacrifice," the city wrote in its post, urging those with information about the vandalism incident to contact the authorities.
Facebook users responding to the city of Cranbrook's post condemned the vandalism.
"Disappointing behaviour. Thank You to everyone that helped clean this up," Facebook user Stephanie Anne wrote.
"Karma will surely deal with the individual(s) who did this," user Mike LeClair wrote.
"A massive thank you to the first responders who stepped up to remove such an unthinkable act of vandalism," he added.
Global News reported that the vandalism in Cranbrook wasn't the only disruption to Remembrance Day events on Thursday. In Kelowna, Canada, anti-vaccine protesters reportedly showed up during a ceremony for veterans. eliciting backlash from the crowd.
The war memorial that was defaced on Thursday was built in 1990 to honor veterans who served in a range of conflicts, including World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War.
According to data from the Canadian government that was available on Friday, more than roughly 74 percent of the country's total population has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. About 78 percent of the total Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine, according to the country's data.
